The historic city of Kaashaan lies at an outskirt of the central kavir (desert) in Iran and about 150 miles south of Tehran. Although the excavations at the Siyalk Hill in Kaashaan reveal a settlement in this location from c. 4000 years ago, but the historic city of Kaashaan is famous for having some of the well-kept, and well-built houses in Iran that are built based on the indigenous architecture. Such houses have well-established areas such as summer and winter rooms, one or two inner courtyards with a shallow pool (Farsi: a houz) and a few flower-beds (Farsi: baaqchehs/ baaghchehes), a guest room, etc. In the historic structure of the city, therefore, there are many heritage houses that are renovated by the Cultural Heritage Organization in Kaashaan or by other owners.. The baadgeir (wind-catching tower) of the Broujerdi heritage house is also famous in Iran. The Fin Garden was a summer resort for the kings during Safavid era. The Baazaar (traditional shopping center) of Kaashaan also is very old ( c. A.D. 17th and 18th centuries) and is a historic site. The illustration of a unique narrow alleyway (Farsi: a koochehe ), taken in a visit to Kaashaan in 1990, which is included in this volume, may be considered as a unique urban feature in the Middle East or internationally (-- in a trip to Kaashaan in 2009, no sign of that koochehe was found and it is possible that it has been widened and converted to an avenue or a street).
